This marbled cookie recipe (biscoito mesclado) is super easy to make—the perfect treat for when you’re craving something sweet or need a quick companion for your afternoon coffee.

Ingredients for Marbled Cookies:

  • 1/2 can sweetened condensed milk;
  • 1 cup unsalted butter or margarine, at room temperature;
  • 1 egg yolk;
  • 1 tablespoon lemon zest;
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (approximately);
  • Butter for greasing the baking sheet;
  • 1 cup milk or semi-sweet chocolate, melted, for decorating.

How to Make Marbled Cookies:

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, butter, egg yolk, lemon zest, and all-purpose flour until a smooth dough forms;
  2. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour as needed;
  3. Take small portions of the dough and shape them into little flattened balls or any shape you prefer;
  4. Place them on a large, greased baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes, or until set—they should not turn golden brown;
  5. Remove from the oven and let them cool completely;
  6. Transfer the melted chocolate into a piping bag with a small tip and drizzle it over the cookies to create a beautiful marbled design;
  7. Let the chocolate set completely before serving.

Tips:

Feel free to get creative! You can add cocoa powder directly to the dough, swap the milk chocolate for white chocolate, or sprinkle crushed peanuts, walnuts, or pecans over the chocolate drizzle. There are so many delicious possibilities!

Fun Facts About Cookies:

The word “biscuit” (or “biscoito” in Portuguese) comes from the Latin biscoctus, meaning “twice-cooked.” It traditionally refers to a pastry made from flour, sugar, and an emulsifier like milk or fat. Originally, it described cake pieces baked a second time to become crispier due to very low moisture content.
