This “cotton” dinner roll recipe truly lives up to its name. It is incredibly soft, light, and comforting—the perfect sweet bread for your afternoon coffee or tea. Give it a try! Let’s get to the recipe.
Ingredients for these cotton-soft rolls:
- 1 cup (240ml) milk, lukewarm;
- 3 tablespoons sugar;
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast;
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil;
- 1 large egg;
- 1 teaspoon salt;
- 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour.
How to make these soft rolls:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the milk and sugar until the sugar is completely dissolved.
- Add the yeast and stir gently.
- Let it rest for about 5 minutes, until the yeast is activated and starts to form small bubbles.
- Stir in the oil, egg, and salt, mixing well to combine.
- Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. The dough will remain slightly sticky.
- Once all the flour is incorporated, transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead lightly with your hands until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough back into the bowl, cover with a clean cloth, and let it rest in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
- After the resting time, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C).
- Divide the dough into portions and shape them into small balls. Place them into a greased baking pan and let them rest again for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30 to 35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown.
- Remove from the oven and let cool completely.
- Enjoy!

Pro Tip:
For an extra touch, you can dissolve a little sugar in warm water and brush it over the rolls as soon as they come out of the oven. Place them back into the turned-off oven for a moment to let the glaze set.
Keep in mind that the rising time may vary depending on your room temperature.
