Kafta is a staple at any Brazilian barbecue, but it’s also the perfect appetizer or snack for a sunny afternoon. Let’s get cooking!
Ingredients for the Kafta:
- Wooden skewers;
- 1.1 lbs (500g) lean ground beef (sirloin or round);
- Black pepper to taste;
- Hot chili pepper (optional, to taste);
- Salt to taste;
- 1.1 lbs (500g) bacon, finely diced or ground.
How to make Kafta:
- In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and bacon, mixing well.
- Add the chili pepper and incorporate thoroughly.
- Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Divide the mixture into 10 equal parts. Carefully shape each portion into a long cylinder around a wooden skewer. If you prefer to bake them in the oven, you can shape them into patties or logs without the skewers.
- Grill or bake until cooked through. Enjoy!

Beyond grilled skewers, kafta can be pan-fried, baked in the oven, or even stewed. It’s delicious served simply with rice, or stuffed into a warm pita bread with a cool cucumber yogurt sauce. Ingredients vary globally: Greeks often add breadcrumbs and wine, while North African variations may include sesame seeds. The spices depend entirely on personal preference and regional traditions.
