Baklava is a dessert that transports us directly to the sun-drenched alleys of the Mediterranean. Its exotic name and delicious combination of crispy, honey-soaked layers are enough to make anyone’s mouth water. Today, we’re uncovering the secrets of this classic delicacy and bringing it right to your table.
Ingredients for Homemade Baklava:
- 1 lb (approx. 450g) phyllo dough
- 1 cup (approx. 225g) unsalted butter, melted
- 2 ½ cups (approx. 300g) walnuts or pistachios, finely chopped
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice
Instructions:
Layering the Phyllo:
- Brush a sheet of phyllo dough with melted butter and place another sheet on top. Repeat this process until you have a stack of 10 sheets.
- Mix the chopped walnuts or pistachios with the ground cinnamon and spread half of this mixture over the phyllo stack.
Building the Layers:
- Add another 5 sheets of phyllo, brushing each one with butter as you stack them.
- Spread the remaining nut mixture over these sheets.
- Cover with the final 10 sheets of phyllo, again brushing butter between each layer.
Cutting into Diamonds:
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond shapes before baking. This makes serving much easier later.
Baking and Preparing the Syrup:
- Bake the baklava in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for approximately 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup. In a small saucepan, combine the honey, water, sugar, and lemon juice. Simmer until slightly thickened.
Finishing Touches:
- As soon as the baklava comes out of the oven, immediately pour the hot syrup over it. Let it soak in completely.
- Allow it to cool completely before serving to ensure the layers remain firm and crispy.
Pro Tip:
For an extra special touch, garnish each piece with a whole pistachio or walnut before serving for added elegance.
