Portuguese-Style Potato Bake

Mondays are perfect for a hearty, comforting dinner to kick off the week with plenty of inspiration and energy. Today, we’re making a delicious Portuguese-style potato bake (Batata Portuguesa). Let’s get cooking!

Ingredients for Portuguese-style Potatoes:

  • Black olives, to taste;
  • 1 yellow onion;
  • Bechamel sauce (white sauce), to taste;
  • Hard-boiled eggs, to taste;
  • Fresh parsley, to taste;
  • Boiled potatoes, sliced;
  • Shredded ham, to taste;
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese, to taste.

Note: Quantities depend on the size of your baking dish and the number of people you’re serving. Simply follow the steps, and it will turn out perfectly regardless of the exact amounts!

How to make Portuguese-style Potatoes:

  1. In a baking dish, arrange a layer of sliced boiled potatoes;
  2. Pour the bechamel sauce evenly over the potatoes;
  3. Layer the shredded ham followed by the shredded mozzarella on top;
  4. Slice the onion into rings and sauté them in a skillet with a drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil until slightly softened;
  5. Place the sautéed onions over the mozzarella and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C);
  6. Bake for about 15 minutes, or until the mozzarella starts to melt;
  7. Carefully remove from the oven to add the sliced hard-boiled eggs and black olives;
  8. Sprinkle with fresh parsley to finish;
  9. Return to the oven for another 5 minutes;
  10. All done! Enjoy your meal!

Variations:

You can customize this recipe by adding hearts of palm, Bolognese sauce, grated Parmesan, requeijão (or cream cheese), or swapping black olives for green ones if you prefer.
