Popcorn is a universal favorite, isn’t it? It’s hard to find someone who doesn’t love it, whether savory or sweet. It’s a staple for movie nights with family and friends. Today, we’re sharing our recipe for homemade caramel popcorn that will be a hit at your next gathering. Let’s get started!
Ingredients for sweet caramel popcorn:
- 1/2 cup popcorn kernels;
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar;
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil;
- 1 tablespoon water;
- 1/2 teaspoon salt;
- Food coloring of your choice (optional).
How to make caramel popcorn:
- Take a large, heavy-bottomed pot with a lid;
- Heat the oil over medium-high heat;
- Add the popcorn kernels and cover the pot;
- Shake the pot continuously while the kernels pop;
- When the popping slows down, remove the pot from the heat and transfer the popcorn to a large bowl;
- In a separate saucepan, combine the sugar, water, and salt over medium heat;
- Stir until the sugar is dissolved, watching closely so it doesn’t burn;
- Let the mixture boil, without stirring, until it changes color and reaches a golden caramel hue;
- Add a few drops of food coloring if desired;
- Remove from heat and pour the caramel over the popcorn;
- Gently toss with a wooden spoon until all the popcorn is evenly coated;
- Spread the popcorn onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it cool completely before serving so the caramel sets perfectly.
Enjoy!
Pro Tips:
To prevent the popcorn from sticking together, spread it in a single layer on the baking sheet to cool. Once completely cool, you can store it in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
