I believe almost everyone knows the famous Netflix series, Squid Game, right? It’s no wonder the cookies featured in one of the show’s challenges became such a massive hit. Inspired by the show, today we’re going to make Korean Dalgona Candy—a fun, interactive recipe for you to enjoy. Let’s get started!
Ingredients for Korean Dalgona Candy:
- 4 tablespoons granulated sugar;
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda (not baking powder).
That’s right, the ingredient list is incredibly simple!
How to make Korean Dalgona Candy:
- In a small pan or ladle, melt the sugar over medium-low heat;
- Stir constantly until it turns into a golden liquid caramel;
- Be very careful during this step—sugar burns quickly, and you don’t want it to turn bitter;
- Remove from heat and quickly stir in the baking soda;
- The mixture will foam and turn a light golden brown color;
- Pour onto a parchment-lined surface or a silicone mat lightly dusted with sugar;
- Let it set for a few seconds, then gently press it flat with a greased spatula or a flat surface;
- Before it hardens completely, use a cookie cutter or a toothpick to press a design into the center;
- All done! Now, grab your friends and see if you can carve out the shape without breaking the cookie!
A fun fact about Dalgona Candy:
Known in Korea as dalgona or ppopgi, this treat is made by melting sugar and adding a pinch of baking soda. It was a popular street snack in the 1970s and 1980s, and it remains a beloved retro comfort food today.
