Ingredients for Homemade Rye Bread:

  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ¼ cups buttermilk or plain yogurt (to make homemade buttermilk, add a splash of lemon juice to regular milk)
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • ¾ cup rye flour
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour

How to Make Rye Bread:

  1. In a mixing bowl, beat the egg and the yogurt or buttermilk together until well combined.
  2. Add the flours, salt, and baking soda. Mix well on medium speed until a dough forms.
  3. Divide the dough into 3 equal parts.
  4. Lightly dust the top of the loaves with flour.
  5. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the loaves on top.
  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for about 30 to 40 minutes.
  7. Keep an eye on them for the perfect golden crust.
  8. Let them cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy!
