Ingredients for this Canned Tomato Sauce:

  • 1 can (28 oz) whole peeled tomatoes
  • 1 medium carrot, finely chopped
  • 14 oz (approx. 400g) lean ground beef
  • 1/2 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp creole seasoning (or a blend of cumin, oregano, and chili powder)
  • 1/2 tsp paprika (to substitute colorau)
  • Fresh parsley and scallions to taste
  • Fresh basil to taste
  • 1/2 can of water (use the empty tomato can)
  • 1 tsp lard (or olive oil)

How to Make the Perfect Tomato Sauce:

  1. First, melt the lard in a large pot or skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add the ground beef and sauté until it begins to brown.
  3. Once browned, add the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, creole seasoning, and paprika. Sauté until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped carrots and the canned tomatoes.
  5. Pour in the water (using the half-can measure), reduce heat to low, and let it simmer.
  6. Once it starts simmering, stir in the fresh parsley, scallions, and basil.
  7. Mix well and let it reduce until the sauce thickens to your preference.
  8. All done! Enjoy your delicious homemade sauce.

Tip:

You can easily prepare this sauce without the ground beef if you prefer a simpler marinara-style base to use in other recipes.

Did you know?

Back in the day, removing tomato skins required blanching them in boiling water followed by an ice bath. This process was time-consuming and labor-intensive, especially when prepping large batches.

Over time, high-quality canned peeled tomatoes became a staple in pantries everywhere. They come pre-cooked and skinless, making them a kitchen essential for quick, delicious, and convenient cooking.
