For tonight’s dinner, we are making a savory treat that everyone loves: Brazilian-style savory hand pies, but with a healthier twist. We’re making baked pastel (baked savory pies). Let’s get to the recipe!
Ingredients for Baked Pastel:
Dough:
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour;
- 4 tbsp (approx. 60g) unsalted butter, chilled;
- 1/4 cup water;
- 1 pinch salt.
Filling (Optional):
- 0.9 lb (approx. 400g) lean ground beef;
- 1/2 yellow onion, diced;
- 2 cloves garlic, minced;
- 1/4 cup shredded carrots;
- 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil;
- Salt and black pepper to taste;
- 1 can (14.5 oz) peeled tomatoes with juice;
- Fresh parsley, chopped, to taste.
How to Make Baked Pastel:
- Start by preparing the filling: in a pan, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef and seasonings.
- Cook until the meat is browned.
- Add the tomatoes and shredded carrots. Let it simmer over medium heat until the sauce thickens. Once ready, set aside to cool.
- For the dough, mix the flour and salt in a large bowl.
- Add the butter and use your fingertips to mix until it reaches a coarse, crumbly texture.
- Gradually add the water and knead until the dough is smooth.
- Shape into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into small circles. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each, fold in half, and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
- Place the pastries on a baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
Enjoy!
Tips:
The filling for these hand pies is very versatile—you can experiment with savory or even sweet fillings! If you want an extra golden finish, brush the tops with a beaten egg wash before baking.
