For tonight’s dinner, we are making a savory treat that everyone loves: Brazilian-style savory hand pies, but with a healthier twist. We’re making baked pastel (baked savory pies). Let’s get to the recipe!

Ingredients for Baked Pastel:

Dough:

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour;
  • 4 tbsp (approx. 60g) unsalted butter, chilled;
  • 1/4 cup water;
  • 1 pinch salt.

Filling (Optional):

  • 0.9 lb (approx. 400g) lean ground beef;
  • 1/2 yellow onion, diced;
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced;
  • 1/4 cup shredded carrots;
  • 3 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil;
  • Salt and black pepper to taste;
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) peeled tomatoes with juice;
  • Fresh parsley, chopped, to taste.

How to Make Baked Pastel:

  1. Start by preparing the filling: in a pan, sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil until fragrant.
  2. Add the ground beef and seasonings.
  3. Cook until the meat is browned.
  4. Add the tomatoes and shredded carrots. Let it simmer over medium heat until the sauce thickens. Once ready, set aside to cool.
  5. For the dough, mix the flour and salt in a large bowl.
  6. Add the butter and use your fingertips to mix until it reaches a coarse, crumbly texture.
  7. Gradually add the water and knead until the dough is smooth.
  8. Shape into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  10. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into small circles. Place a spoonful of filling in the center of each, fold in half, and crimp the edges with a fork to seal.
  11. Place the pastries on a baking sheet and bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown.

Enjoy!

Tips:

The filling for these hand pies is very versatile—you can experiment with savory or even sweet fillings! If you want an extra golden finish, brush the tops with a beaten egg wash before baking.
