A fun fact about an ingredient: Vanilla!
Spanish explorers discovered vanilla in the early 16th century following the conquest of Central America. While there is no concrete evidence it was encountered during initial expeditions, such as those of Ojeda and Nicuesa (1509) or Núñez de Balboa (1513), historical consensus links the discovery to Hernán Cortés’ arrival in Tenochtitlan and his meeting with Moctezuma II. Sahagún described the Aztec custom of using vanilla to flavor chocolate. The first written reference and illustration of vanilla appeared in the Florentine Codex, written by Aztec scholars Martín de la Cruz and Juan Badiano in 1552 (Source: Wikipedia).
