A Brief History of the Skillet:

Copper skillets were used as far back as ancient Mesopotamia. Skillets were also popular in ancient Greece, where they were called tagēnon, and in Rome, where they were known as patela or sartago—the origin of the English word “pan” (from the Old English panna). Before 19th-century stoves, cast iron pans called “spiders” were used, featuring a handle and three legs to stand directly over coals. Modern flat-bottomed skillets were designed specifically as stoves became common, with the flat cast-iron skillet becoming widely available by the late 19th century (Source: Wikipedia).
