Ingredients for Homemade Garlic Knots:
Dough:
- 1 tsp granulated sugar;
- 1 cup warm water;
- 2 tsp active dry yeast;
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour;
- 1 tsp salt;
- 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil.
Garlic Butter Topping:
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter, melted;
- 1 tbsp minced garlic;
- 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped;
- 1 tsp salt;
- ½ cup grated parmesan cheese.
How to make Homemade Garlic Knots:
- In a bowl, combine the sugar, warm water, and active dry yeast; stir gently.
- You can prepare the dough in the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl.
- Ensure the water is warm to the touch, but not too hot, or it may kill the yeast.
- Let the yeast proof for 10 minutes.
- The mixture should look foamy on top and have a slightly earthy, yeasty aroma.
- If the yeast doesn’t bubble or foam after 10 minutes, you may need to start over with fresh yeast.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and salt.
- Add the flour mixture and olive oil to the yeast mixture.
- Mix until the flour is incorporated, about one minute.
- Set your stand mixer to medium speed and knead for 3-5 minutes.
- The dough should pull away from the sides of the bowl, feel elastic when pulled with a dough hook, and look smooth.
- Lightly grease a large bowl.
- Transfer the dough to the bowl and cover with a clean kitchen towel.
- Place the dough in a warm spot to rise for 50 minutes or until doubled in size.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Lightly flour a clean work surface.
- Place the dough on the surface and knead it gently about 4 times.
- Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces using a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
- Roll each piece into an 8-inch rope.
- Tie each rope into a knot and place it on the prepared baking sheet.
- Cover with plastic wrap and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (approx. 200°C) and bake the knots for 20-25 minutes or until lightly golden.
- While the knots bake, whisk together the melted butter, minced garlic, and parsley.
- Brush the garlic butter mixture over the knots as soon as they come out of the oven. Sprinkle with the grated parmesan and enjoy!
