Did you know?
Although it originated in the Americas, the production and consumption of chocolate in Brazil began with European colonization. The cocoa industry was introduced to Brazil in the 17th century by the Portuguese, becoming an important product of the Amazon region.
From Brazil, it was taken to Guinea, from where it spread to other European colonies in West Africa and, later, to Southeast Asia and Oceania. Large-scale Brazilian cultivation began in the 19th century in the Ilhéus region, in the south of Bahia.
The local climate made Brazil the world leader in cocoa production between 1905 and 1910. By 1993, global production of cocoa beans reached 2.5 million tons.
